Born in Manchester, Harold Lever studied law at Manchester University before being called to the Bar in 1935. During World War II he served in the Royal Air Force. Lever was elected as an MP at the 1945 general election. He promoted the Private Member’s Bill that became the Defamation Act of 1952.
